Our latest run leader to go under the hotspot, is the legendary 8.5 min mile Monday pacer Alastair McKay. When not at work or leading our Monday nights, Al can often be found in the gym or on a local trail. He's the guy in the know - best kit, latest nutrition (or coffee) ask Al - and if he doesn't know, he'll find out for you. Over to you Al!
How did you get into running?
I originally started running as a way to get out of the house for 30 minutes when I was studying. It was a great way to get some fresh air and clear my mind. When I finished my exams in 2018 I decided to join my local running club and never looked back.
Greatest running achievement?
The Gritstone 35mile Ultra this year, it was my first ultra and the first time I’d approached a race with the attitude that I would just enjoy the day. I’ve found the more relaxed approach to trail running and being in the hills a much more fun form of running.
Biggest running disaster?
Hitting the wall just over 2 hours into Manchester marathon, got the fuelling all wrong. Awful second half of the race. Awful.
Run in the snow or sun?
Definitely the snow, am not good in hot weather.
Best skill outside of running?
I can complete a rubix cube while standing on a balance board in under 3 minutes. (FYI happy to demonstrate if you don’t believe me). [Christmas Party Al? ]
